My grandmother’s Wedding

I knew that my maternal grandparents were married outdoors on the farm of her Aunt Lily and Uncle Jeff somewhere in Chester County, but never knew quite where the farm was. I even have some old photographs from the wedding and various family pictures of my mother and her cousins playing at the farm. At long last, I have at least a partial answer to the question of the farm’s location – it was in Newlin township!

Oddly enough, I wasn’t even looking for that piece of information – I was simply browsing the FamilySearch.org site for Bratton records and there was the marriage record for Gregg and Elizabeth, with the location given as McClellan farm, Newlin township. So, now I have another question – is the house still standing and, if so, where is it located within Newlin township?

UncleJeffs3Though his full name was Thomas Jefferson McClellan, he was always known as Uncle Jeff. Similarly, she was Aunt Lily, though her  full name was Elizabeth McCune and was my  great-grandmother’s younger sister.

The McClellan farm was a frequent spot for family gatherings when my mother was a child and I have quite a few pictures that were taken there. They must have had a fair amount of land at the time as there was a good-sized pond and Uncle Jeff raised sheep. I’ve never been able to find too much info abut the McClellan family, but my great-grandmother and her sister were well known in the society pages of Cumberland county, particularly in Carlisle where they lived. All of which leads me back to what I was doing when I found the marriages record – I’ve been working on a rebuilt version of my Cumberland County Genealogy page, which you might want to check out – here’s the address: http://pacumberland.usgensites.com
